The National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) formerly known as National Open School (NOS) was established in November,1989 as an autonomous organisation in pursuance of National Policy on Education 1986 by the Ministry of Education (MOE), Government of India. NIOS is providing a number of Vocational, Life Enrichment and community oriented courses besides General and Academic Courses at Secondary and Senior Secondary level. It also offers Elementary level Courses through its Open Basic Education Programmes (OBE).Government of India through a gazette notification vested NIOS with the authority to examine and certify learners registered with it upto pre degree level courses whether Academic, Technical or Vocational. Association of Indian Universities, vide letter No . EV/11(354)/91/25 July, 1991 issued Equivalence of Senior Secondary Certificate Examination of NIOS.

Admission Types & Cycles

Most Common
Normal Admission Cycle (Stream 1)
Conducted in two blocks: March 1 – September 1 for April–May exams, and September 2 – March 1 for October–November exams. The standard route for fresh students meeting eligibility criteria.

Flexible
ODE — On-Demand Examination
Appear for exams whenever you're ready — no fixed public exam schedule. Schedule your exam at designated NIOS centres, subject to seat availability. Maximum flexibility for self-paced learners.

Fast-Track
Stream 2 Admission
Designed for learners who appeared but couldn't pass Secondary or Senior Secondary exams from a recognized board. Take NIOS exams in the same year for a quicker path to qualification.

Eligibility Criteria

  • The learner must have passed Secondary (Class X) from a recognized board.
  • Minimum age of 17 years as on the prescribed cut-off date.
  • No upper age limit — open to learners of all ages.
  • Submission of required supporting documents:Class X certificate, age proof, identity proof, and photographs during the admission process.

Subject Combination & Structure

Learners enjoy a wide choice of subjects tailored to their interests and career goals. A minimum of 2 language subjects are compulsory, and certification is awarded upon successfully passing at least five subjects. Examinations may be taken through Public Exams or On-Demand Examinations (ODE) as per eligibility.

Exam Mode & Medium

Offline Examination

All exams are conducted in offline mode at recognized examination centres. Question papers include descriptive and long-type answers.

Theory + Practicals

Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Computer & Office Applications, Mathematics, Data Entry Operations, Science & Technology, and Mathematics (SSLC) include both theory and practical examinations.

Bilingual Medium

Non-language subjects can be attempted in English or Malayalam, offering comfort and flexibility to regional learners.

Flexible Scheduling

Learners can appear for public examinations twice a year (April–May and October–November) or opt for On-Demand Examinations at their convenience.

Career & Job Eligibility

Recognized by the Government of India as a valid Class XII qualification.
Eligible for undergraduate (degree) programs in recognized universities and colleges,
Accepted for government and private sector jobs requiring a Class XII qualification.
