NIOS SSLC

The National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) formerly known as National Open School (NOS) was established in November,1989 as an autonomous organisation in pursuance of National Policy on Education 1986 by the Ministry of Education (MOE), Government of India. NIOS is providing a number of Vocational, Life Enrichment and community oriented courses besides General and Academic Courses at Secondary and Senior Secondary level. It also offers Elementary level Courses through its Open Basic Education Programmes (OBE).Government of India through a gazette notification vested NIOS with the authority to examine and certify learners registered with it upto pre degree level courses whether Academic, Technical or Vocational. Association of Indian Universities, vide letter No . EV/11(354)/91/25 July, 1991 issued Equivalence of Senior Secondary Certificate Examination of NIOS.

Road Map

Admission Types & Cycles

Stream 1
Normal Admission Cycle
Conducted in two blocks: March 1 – September 1 for learners appearing in April–May public examinations, and September 2 – March 1 for learners appearing in October–November public examinations. This is the most common admission route for fresh students who meet SSLC eligibility criteria.

ODE
On-Demand Examination Admission
Under the ODE system, learners can appear for exams whenever they feel prepared without waiting for the public exam schedule. Exams can be scheduled at designated NIOS examination centres, subject to seat availability.

Stream 2
Stream 2 Admission
For learners who appeared but were unable to pass Secondary examinations from a recognized board. It enables them to take NIOS SSLC examinations in the same year for quicker completion.

Eligibility Criteria

  • The learner must have passed Class VIII from a recognized school.
  • In the absence of a Class VIII certificate, a self-certificate is acceptable as per NIOS norms.
  • Minimum age of 14 years as on the prescribed cut-off date.
  • No upper age limit for admission.
  • Submission of required documents such as age proof, identity proof, and photographs.

Subject Combination & Structure

Learners must select a minimum of 5 subjects and can choose up to 7 subjects out of 13 available subjects. A minimum of 2 language subjects are compulsory. Certification is awarded upon successfully passing at least five subjects. Exams may be taken through Public Exams or On-Demand Examinations (ODE).
